Today in our environmental science lecture, we'll discuss urban green spaces. A recent study in Melbourne found that increasing tree canopy cover by 20% could reduce summer temperatures by up to 4 degrees Celsius. However, the researchers noted that the effect was strongest in areas with high building density, where shade is most needed. Interestingly, they also discovered that parks with diverse native plant species attracted more bird species than those with just lawns and a few exotic trees. This biodiversity boost, in turn, helped control insect pests naturally. So, the key takeaway is not just planting more trees, but focusing on the right mix of species in the right locations.
❓ What did the study in Melbourne find about increasing tree canopy cover?
A. It reduced temperatures by 4 degrees in all urban areas.
B. It was most effective in densely built areas.
C. It increased the number of exotic bird species.
