Narrator: Listen to part of a lecture in a biology class. Professor: So, we've been discussing animal communication, and today I want to focus on a fascinating example: the waggle dance of honeybees. When a forager bee discovers a rich source of nectar, it returns to the hive and performs a series of movements on the vertical surface of the honeycomb. This dance communicates two key pieces of information: the direction and the distance of the food source relative to the sun. The angle of the dance relative to vertical indicates the angle of the food source relative to the sun. For example, if the bee dances straight up, the food is directly toward the sun. If it dances at a 30-degree angle to the right of vertical, the food is 30 degrees to the right of the sun. The duration of the waggle run, the straight part of the dance, indicates the distance. Longer waggle runs mean the food is farther away. Interestingly, this dance is a symbolic representation, not a direct flight path. The bees use the sun as a reference point, but they can also compensate for the sun's movement over time. This discovery, which earned Karl von Frisch a Nobel Prize, shows how sophisticated insect communication can be.
❓ คำถาม What is the main purpose of the waggle dance in honeybees, according to the professor?
