Listen to part of a lecture in an environmental science class. Professor: Today we’re going to discuss the concept of 'peak water,' which is analogous to peak oil. Peak water refers to the point at which the renewable supply of freshwater in a region becomes limited, often due to over-extraction from aquifers or rivers. Unlike oil, water is a renewable resource, but that doesn’t mean it’s infinite. In many arid regions, such as parts of the American Southwest, groundwater is being pumped faster than it can be naturally replenished. This leads to a situation where the 'peak' of available water is reached, and then the supply declines. One key factor is the time lag—aquifers recharge very slowly, sometimes over centuries. So, even if we reduce pumping today, the effects won’t be felt for generations. Another issue is the connection between water and energy, often called the water-energy nexus. Producing energy, like cooling power plants, requires vast amounts of water, and extracting and treating water requires energy. So, when we face peak water, we also face challenges in energy production. This interdependence makes solving water scarcity especially complex.
❓ คำถาม What is the main point the professor makes about peak water?

✅ คำตอบที่ถูกต้อง

B) It occurs when water use exceeds the natural recharge rate, and it has long-term effects due to slow aquifer replenishment.
