Listen to part of a lecture in an environmental science class. The professor is discussing the concept of 'ecological footprint.' Professor: Today we're going to talk about the ecological footprint, a tool that measures human demand on nature. Essentially, it calculates how much land and water area a population requires to produce the resources it consumes and to absorb its wastes, especially carbon dioxide. Now, you might think that this is a straightforward calculation, but it's not. The footprint varies greatly depending on lifestyle, technology, and even geography. For example, a person living in a densely populated city with good public transportation may have a smaller footprint than someone in a rural area who depends on a car for everything. But here's an interesting twist: the footprint is often compared with the Earth's 'biocapacity,' which is the amount of productive area available to regenerate these resources. When our global footprint exceeds the Earth's biocapacity, we have what we call 'overshoot.' Currently, we are in a state of overshoot, meaning we are using more than the planet can renew in a year. This leads to depletion of natural capital, such as forests and fisheries. Some argue that technology can solve this by making processes more efficient, but others caution that efficiency gains are often offset by increased consumption. So, what can we do? It's not just about individual actions; it's about systemic change. But understanding the footprint is the first step.
❓ Câu hỏi According to the professor, what is the most important feature of the ecological footprint concept?

✅ Đáp án đúng

It compares human resource use with the Earth's capacity to regenerate.
