Listen to part of a lecture in a biology class. The professor is discussing the behavior of fireflies. Professor: We often think of fireflies as a summer spectacle, but their glowing is actually a form of communication. Most firefly species use bioluminescence to attract mates. The males fly around and emit specific patterns of light, while the females, typically perched on vegetation, respond with their own flashes. However, these signals are not just for romance. Some female fireflies of the genus Photuris mimic the flash patterns of other species to lure unsuspecting males. When the male approaches, she attacks and eats him. This behavior provides the female with nutrients, including toxic compounds called lucibufagins, which she uses for her own defense. Interestingly, males of the prey species have evolved to become less responsive to certain flash patterns over time, reducing the risk of predation. So, what seems like a simple light show is actually a complex evolutionary arms race between predator and prey.
❓ Câu hỏi According to the professor, why do some female fireflies mimic the flash patterns of other species?

✅ Đáp án đúng
