TOEFL Speaking Task 2

Campus Announcement: New Fitness Center Hours Starting next semester, the campus fitness center will extend its hours to 24/7 operation. This change aims to accommodate students with varying schedules, especially those who study or work late. To ensure safety during overnight hours, swipe-card access will be required, and security personnel will be on duty. The university believes this will promote healthier lifestyles among students.

M: Did you see the announcement about the fitness center going 24/7? That's awesome! I often finish my lab work at 11 p.m., and now I can actually go for a workout afterward. W: I get that, but I'm not so thrilled. The extended hours mean more people will be there at odd times, and it might get too crowded during the day when most of us go. Plus, I've heard that overnight access could lead to more maintenance issues, which might force the center to close for repairs more often. M: But they're hiring extra security, so it should be safe. And I think the demand is there—many students, like me, would use it late. The university surveyed us, remember? Over 70% supported the idea. W: True, but I still worry about the cost. They might have to raise the student activity fee to cover the 24/7 staffing and security. That's a real downside for me. M: I hadn't thought about that. But for me, the convenience outweighs the potential fee increase. I'd rather pay a little extra than miss out on workouts.
