TOEFL Speaking Task 2

Campus Announcement: Starting next semester, the university library will extend its hours to 24/5, from Monday 6 a.m. to Saturday midnight. The library will remain closed on Sundays. This change aims to accommodate students’ diverse study schedules, particularly during midterms and finals. Additionally, the university will hire more part-time student assistants to manage the extended hours, providing additional on-campus job opportunities.

M: Did you see the announcement about the library staying open 24/5? I think it's a great idea. W: Really? I'm not so sure. It might be a waste of resources. M: But think about it—many students, like me, are night owls. I do my best work after midnight, especially before exams. Now I won't have to rush to finish by midnight or study in cramped dorm rooms. W: I see your point, but won't it be costly to keep the lights and heating on all night? And who will monitor the building? M: They're hiring student assistants. That gives more jobs on campus, which is a plus. Plus, the library will be less crowded during the day because people can spread out their study times. W: Hmm, that's true. But I still worry about the extra noise during my afternoon study sessions if more people come at different times. M: Actually, the library already has quiet zones. I think the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. Many students will really appreciate the flexibility.
