TOEFL Speaking Task 3

In biology, the term 'behavioral adaptation' refers to an action or series of actions that an organism performs to survive in its environment. Unlike physical adaptations, which involve body structures, behavioral adaptations are learned or instinctive responses that increase an organism's chances of reproduction and survival. These behaviors can include migration, hibernation, hunting strategies, or social cooperation. They often arise through natural selection, as individuals with beneficial behaviors are more likely to pass on their genes. Understanding behavioral adaptations helps scientists predict how species might respond to environmental changes.

Professor: Let me give you a clear example from a study on a type of sea turtle. These turtles hatch on sandy beaches and immediately crawl toward the ocean. But here's the interesting part—researchers found that hatchlings use the natural light of the horizon over the water to guide them. That's a behavioral adaptation. However, on beaches with artificial lights from buildings, the hatchlings become disoriented and crawl inland instead, which is dangerous. So, scientists are now working to reduce artificial lighting near nesting sites. This shows that the behavior isn't fixed—it can be disrupted by human activity, and understanding it helps us protect the species. The key point is that this crawling toward the ocean is an innate, survival-promoting behavior shaped by evolution.
