📖 読解資料

In psychology, the term 'cognitive dissonance' refers to the mental discomfort experienced when a person holds two or more contradictory beliefs, values, or attitudes. This discomfort often leads individuals to attempt to reduce the inconsistency by changing their beliefs, justifying their behavior, or adding new cognitions. For example, if a person values health but smokes, they may feel dissonance. To resolve it, they might downplay the health risks or convince themselves that smoking helps them manage stress, thereby aligning their beliefs with their actions.

🎧 リスニング講義

Professor: Let me illustrate cognitive dissonance with a classic study. In the 1950s, Leon Festinger and his colleagues infiltrated a group that believed a flood would destroy the world on a specific date. When the date passed without a flood, the group's belief was clearly contradicted by reality. You'd expect them to abandon their belief, right? But instead, they rationalized it—they claimed that their intense prayers and devotion had saved the planet. So they actually became more committed to their cause. This is a perfect example: the dissonance between their prediction and the outcome was so strong that they invented a new explanation to reduce the discomfort. Rather than admitting they were wrong, they added a new cognition—'our faith worked'—to keep their worldview intact.
❓ 質問 Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of cognitive dissonance.
