TOEFL การพูด Task 3

📖 เนื้อเรื่อง

The concept of 'functional fixedness' refers to the tendency of individuals to perceive objects only in their conventional or intended functions, which can hinder creative problem-solving. When faced with a task that requires an unconventional use of an object, people often fail to see alternatives because their mental representation of the object's function is rigidly fixed. This cognitive bias limits flexibility and innovation, as solutions that require thinking beyond typical uses are overlooked.

🎧 การบรรยาย

Professor: Let me give you a classic example from psychology. In an experiment, participants were given a box of thumbtacks, a candle, and a book of matches, and were asked to attach the candle to the wall so it could burn without dripping wax on the floor. Many struggled because they saw the box only as a container for the tacks. The solution was to empty the box, tack it to the wall as a small shelf, and place the candle on top. But people who saw the box's function as 'holding tacks' couldn't realize it could also serve as a platform. This illustrates functional fixedness—they were stuck because they couldn't break free from the box's typical role.
❓ คำถาม Question: Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of functional fixedness.
