The concept of 'functional fixedness' refers to a cognitive bias that limits a person to using an object only in the way it is traditionally used. This mental block prevents individuals from seeing alternative uses for familiar objects, thereby hindering problem-solving and creativity. Functional fixedness often arises because people become accustomed to an object's typical function and fail to perceive its potential beyond that standard role. Overcoming this bias requires actively thinking about an object's properties and possible novel applications.

Professor: Today, let's talk about functional fixedness. I once had a situation in my lab where we needed to keep a door propped open, but we didn't have a doorstop. A student grabbed a heavy textbook and used it to hold the door. That's a good example of overcoming functional fixedness because a book is normally for reading, not for propping doors. But another student said, 'Why not use the coffee mug?' Everyone laughed because the mug had a handle and could easily hold the door, but no one thought of it initially because we associate mugs with drinking coffee. So, the first student saw the book as a weight, not just a reading material, and solved the problem. The second suggestion also worked, but the point is that our initial mindset was stuck on the standard use of these objects.
❓ 问题 Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of functional fixedness.
