In biology, the concept of 'behavioral thermoregulation' refers to the deliberate actions an animal takes to regulate its body temperature by exploiting its environment. Unlike physiological mechanisms such as sweating or shivering, behavioral thermoregulation involves moving to different microclimates, altering posture, or changing activity patterns. This strategy is common among ectotherms—animals that rely on external heat sources—because they cannot generate their own body heat. By selecting warmer or cooler spots in their habitat, these animals can maintain optimal body temperatures for essential functions like digestion, movement, and reproduction.

Professor: Let me give you a concrete example from a desert lizard species. During the early morning, the desert floor is still cool, so the lizard is sluggish. To warm up, it presses its body flat against a sun-heated rock, maximizing the surface area exposed to the warmth. This allows its body temperature to rise quickly. But by midday, the ground becomes scorching hot, and the lizard risks overheating. So it retreats to the shade of a bush or burrows into the sand, which are cooler. It might also raise its body off the hot sand, lifting its legs to reduce contact. By moving between these microhabitats throughout the day, the lizard keeps its body temperature within a safe range, enabling it to hunt for insects and avoid predators effectively. This active selection of hotter or cooler spots is exactly what we call behavioral thermoregulation.
