In psychology, the concept of 'functional fixedness' refers to a cognitive bias that limits a person to using an object only in its traditional manner. This mental block prevents individuals from recognizing alternative uses for familiar items, thereby hindering problem-solving and creativity. Functional fixedness often arises from past experiences and learned behaviors, which create rigid mental categories. Overcoming this bias requires deliberate effort to think beyond conventional applications and to perceive objects based on their potential properties rather than their typical functions.

Professor: Let me illustrate this with a classic experiment. Participants were asked to attach a candle to a wall so that it could burn without dripping wax on the floor. They were given a box of tacks, a candle, and matches. Most people tried to tack the candle directly to the wall or melt wax to stick it—both failed. The solution? Empty the tack box, tack it to the wall as a platform, and place the candle inside. Why was this hard? Because participants saw the box only as a container for tacks, not as a potential shelf. This is functional fixedness—their past experience with boxes as containers blocked the creative use. Once someone pointed out the box could serve as a platform, they immediately saw the solution. So the key is to break the mental set and ask, 'What else can this object do?'
