The concept of 'niche construction' refers to the process by which organisms actively modify their environment, thereby altering the selective pressures they and other species face. Unlike the traditional view that organisms simply adapt to pre-existing environments, niche construction highlights that organisms are agents of their own evolution. For example, beavers building dams change water flow, creating wetland habitats that favor certain species over others. This modified environment then exerts new evolutionary pressures on the beavers themselves and on coexisting organisms, demonstrating a feedback loop between organism and habitat.

Professor: Let me give you a concrete example from a study I conducted in a forest ecosystem. Consider the woodpecker, specifically the acorn woodpecker. These birds drill holes into the bark of oak trees to store acorns for winter. Over time, they create hundreds of small cavities in a single tree. This activity doesn't just benefit the woodpeckers—it changes the tree's structure. The holes allow rainwater to seep in, which accelerates the decay of the tree's heartwood. As a result, the tree becomes weaker and eventually hollows out. This hollow tree then serves as a nesting site for other birds, like the western bluebird, which cannot excavate cavities themselves. The woodpeckers' behavior has thus modified the environment, creating new opportunities for other species. Moreover, the woodpeckers themselves face new pressures: because the tree weakens, they must constantly maintain or abandon their storage sites, which influences their social behavior and migration patterns.
