In psychology, the concept of 'functional fixedness' refers to a cognitive bias that limits a person to using an object only in the way it is traditionally used. This mental block prevents individuals from seeing alternative uses for familiar items, thereby hindering creative problem-solving. When people encounter a problem that requires a novel approach, their preconceived notions about an object's function can blind them to potential solutions. Overcoming functional fixedness often involves deliberately re-examining the properties and possible applications of everyday objects, allowing for more flexible and innovative thinking.

Professor: Now, let me illustrate this with a classic experiment. Participants were given a box of tacks, a candle, and a book of matches, and were asked to attach the candle to a wall so it could burn properly. Many people struggled. They tried to tack the candle directly to the wall, but it broke, or they tried to melt the wax to stick it, but that didn't work either. The solution was to empty the tack box, tack it to the wall, and use it as a platform for the candle. Why did so many fail? Because they saw the box solely as a container for tacks, not as a potential shelf. That's functional fixedness—they were stuck on the box's usual function. Once someone pointed out using the box as a platform, it seemed obvious. So, the key is to break that mental set and think about alternative functions for objects.
