TOEFL Speaking Task 3

In biology, the term 'behavioral adaptation' refers to an action or series of actions that an organism performs to survive and reproduce in its environment. Unlike physical adaptations, which are structural features, behavioral adaptations are learned or instinctive responses that help an animal cope with challenges such as finding food, avoiding predators, or regulating body temperature. These behaviors can be innate, like a spider spinning a web, or learned through experience, such as a bird migrating after observing seasonal changes. Behavioral adaptations are crucial for an organism's fitness and often evolve over time through natural selection.

Professor: So, let me give you a clear example of a behavioral adaptation. Consider the desert iguana. In the scorching heat of the desert, ground temperatures can exceed 50 degrees Celsius, which would be deadly if the lizard stayed on the sand for too long. To survive, the iguana exhibits a specific behavior: it climbs onto rocks or low bushes during the hottest part of the day. By elevating its body off the hot ground, it reduces the heat it absorbs, allowing it to stay active and search for food, like insects and flowers, without overheating. This isn't a physical trait—it's a deliberate action the iguana takes based on its environment. Over generations, iguanas that instinctively climbed higher were more likely to survive and reproduce, so this behavior became common in the species. So, you see, this climbing behavior is a perfect example of a behavioral adaptation.
