📖 Reading Passage

The concept of 'functional fixedness' refers to a cognitive bias that limits a person to using an object only in the way it is traditionally used. This mental block prevents individuals from seeing alternative uses for familiar items, thereby hindering problem-solving and creativity. Functional fixedness often arises when people become overly familiar with an object's standard function, making it difficult to think outside the box in novel situations.

🎧 Listening Lecture

Professor: So, let me give you a classic example. In a psychology experiment, participants were given a box of thumbtacks, a candle, and a book of matches, and they were asked to attach the candle to the wall so that it could burn properly. Many participants failed because they tried to nail or glue the candle to the wall using the thumbtacks. But the solution was to empty the thumbtack box, tack it to the wall as a shelf, and then place the candle inside it. The problem was that they saw the box only as a container for thumbtacks, not as a potential shelf. That's functional fixedness. Once someone pointed out the box could be used differently, they immediately saw the solution, but their initial mental block prevented them from thinking creatively.
❓ Question Question: Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of functional fixedness.
