Meerkats live in groups, and they have a fascinating behavior: one individual acts as a sentinel while others forage for food. The sentinel climbs to a high point, stands on its hind legs, and scans the horizon for predators like eagles or snakes. When it spots danger, it emits a distinct alarm call, and all meerkats immediately dive into burrows. This behavior is not genetic—it is learned from older group members and refined over time. Why is it adaptive? Well, sentinels are more exposed to predators, but by taking turns, each meerkat gains protection while feeding. This coordinated vigilance significantly reduces the risk of being caught, allowing more individuals to survive and reproduce.
