TOEFL Устная речь Task 3

In biology, the concept of 'mutualism' refers to a symbiotic relationship between two species where both organisms benefit from the interaction. This is distinct from parasitism, where one organism benefits at the expense of the other, and commensalism, where one benefits while the other is unaffected. Mutualistic relationships often involve the exchange of resources, such as nutrients, protection, or pollination services. These interactions can be essential for the survival of one or both species, and they typically evolve over long periods, leading to co-adaptation. Understanding mutualism is crucial for studying ecosystem stability and biodiversity.

Professor: So, let's look at a clear example of mutualism from a rainforest. Consider the acacia tree and the ants that live on it. The acacia tree provides the ants with shelter—it has hollow thorns where ants can nest—and it also produces a special nectar on its leaves that the ants feed on. Now, what do the ants give back? They protect the tree. They aggressively attack any herbivore, like insects or even larger animals, that try to eat the leaves. They also trim away competing plants that grow near the base of the tree, clearing space for the acacia to get more sunlight. In this relationship, both species benefit: the ants get a safe home and a steady food source, and the acacia tree gets defense and less competition. Without the ants, the acacia would likely be eaten or overshadowed; without the tree, the ants would lose their home and food. So, this is a classic case of mutualism in action.
