托福口语 Task 3

In biology, the term 'behavioral adaptation' refers to an action or series of actions that an organism performs to increase its chances of survival and reproduction in its environment. Unlike physical adaptations, which are structural features, behavioral adaptations are learned or instinctive responses to environmental challenges. These behaviors can include hunting strategies, mating rituals, migration patterns, or methods of avoiding predators. Behavioral adaptations are crucial because they allow organisms to respond flexibly to changes in their habitat, thereby improving their fitness. For example, a species may develop a unique feeding technique to exploit a food source that other competitors cannot access.

Professor: Let me give you a concrete example from a study on a type of bird called the green heron. These birds live near water and feed on small fish. Most herons stand still and wait for fish to come close, but green herons have a remarkable behavioral adaptation. They have learned to use bait—they drop insects, feathers, or even bread crumbs onto the water's surface. When a fish swims up to investigate the floating object, the heron quickly strikes and catches it. This behavior is not instinctive; young herons observe their parents and gradually master the technique. By using bait, green herons can catch larger fish that stay deeper and would otherwise be inaccessible. This gives them a clear survival advantage, especially in areas where food is scarce or competition is high.
