In psychology, the concept of 'functional fixedness' refers to the tendency to perceive an object only in terms of its most common use, which can hinder problem-solving. When individuals are fixated on an object's typical function, they fail to see alternative ways it could be utilized to solve a novel problem. This cognitive bias limits creativity and flexibility in thinking, often preventing people from finding innovative solutions to challenges they face.

Professor: Let me give you an example from a classic experiment. Imagine you are in a room with a table, and on the table there is a candle, a box of thumbtacks, and a book of matches. Your task is to attach the candle to the wall so that it can burn properly without dripping wax on the floor. Many people initially try to nail the candle directly to the wall with a thumbtack, but the candle is too thick. Others try to melt the bottom of the candle with a match and stick it to the wall, but that doesn't work either. The solution is to empty the thumbtack box, use a thumbtack to nail the box to the wall, and then place the candle inside the box. However, most people fail to see the box as a potential holder because they are fixated on its typical function as a container for thumbtacks. This is a clear demonstration of functional fixedness—their mental block prevents them from using the box in a novel way.
❓ 问题 Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of functional fixedness.
