📖 읽기 자료

The concept of 'functional fixedness' refers to a cognitive bias that limits a person to using an object only in the way it is traditionally used. This mental block prevents individuals from seeing novel uses for familiar items, thereby hindering problem-solving and creative thinking. Functional fixedness often arises when people become overly familiar with an object's standard function, making it difficult to imagine alternative applications. Overcoming this bias requires deliberate effort to reframe the object's purpose and consider its physical properties rather than its conventional role.

Professor: Let me give you an example from a classic psychology experiment. Participants were given a box of thumbtacks, a candle, and a book of matches. Their task was to attach the candle to the wall so it could burn properly without dripping wax on the floor. Many participants tried to tack the candle directly to the wall or melt wax onto the box to stick it—both failed. The solution was to empty the box, tack it to the wall, and use it as a platform for the candle. But most people couldn’t see the box as anything other than a container for thumbtacks. That’s functional fixedness—they were stuck on the box’s usual role. Once someone pointed out the box could be used as a shelf, they immediately saw the solution. So the key is to break that mental set.
❓ 문제 Question: Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of functional fixedness.
