In psychology, the concept of 'functional fixedness' refers to a cognitive bias that limits a person to using an object only in the way it is traditionally used. This mental block prevents individuals from seeing alternative uses for familiar items, thereby hindering problem-solving and creativity. Functional fixedness often arises when people become overly accustomed to an object's standard function, making it difficult to imagine novel applications. Overcoming this bias requires conscious effort to think beyond conventional uses, which can lead to more innovative solutions.

Professor: Let me illustrate this with a classic experiment. Participants were given a box of thumbtacks, a candle, and a book of matches, and asked to attach the candle to a wall so that it could burn properly. Many struggled. The solution was to empty the thumbtack box, tack it to the wall, and use it as a shelf for the candle. But most participants failed because they saw the box only as a container for thumbtacks—its traditional function. They couldn't think of using it as a platform. This is a perfect example of functional fixedness. Once they realized the box could serve a different purpose, the problem became easy. So, in our daily lives, when we're stuck on a problem, we should ask ourselves, 'What other uses might this object have?' That's the key to breaking free from this cognitive trap.
