📖 阅读材料

In biology, the term 'behavioral adaptation' refers to an action or series of actions that an organism performs to increase its chances of survival and reproduction in its environment. Unlike physical adaptations, which involve structural changes, behavioral adaptations are learned or instinctive responses to specific environmental challenges. These behaviors can include migration, mating rituals, or foraging strategies. They are shaped by natural selection over generations, allowing species to better cope with changes such as climate shifts, predators, or food scarcity.

Professor: Let me give you a clear example. The monarch butterfly is famous for its long migration. Every fall, millions of monarchs in North America fly thousands of miles south to warmer forests in Mexico. This is not a random movement; it's an instinctive behavior triggered by shorter daylight and cooler temperatures. Once they arrive, they cluster on trees to conserve heat and survive the winter. In spring, they fly north again, laying eggs along the way. This seasonal round-trip migration is a behavioral adaptation because it allows the butterflies to escape freezing conditions and find food sources that disappear in winter. Without this behavior, the species would not survive in its northern habitats.
❓ 问题 Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of behavioral adaptation.
