📖 Bài đọc

In psychology, the concept of 'functional fixedness' refers to a cognitive bias that limits a person to using an object only in the way it is traditionally used. This mental block prevents individuals from seeing alternative uses for familiar objects, thereby hindering problem-solving. When faced with a novel challenge, people often fail to think creatively because they are 'fixed' on the object's typical function. Overcoming functional fixedness requires a deliberate shift in perspective to consider unconventional applications.

Professor: Let me give you a classic example from a study. Participants were given a box of thumbtacks, a candle, and a book of matches. Their task was to attach the candle to a wall so that it could burn without dripping wax on the floor. Many people tried to tack the candle directly to the wall or melt wax to stick it, but both failed. The solution was to empty the thumbtack box, tack it to the wall as a small platform, and place the candle inside it. However, participants who received the thumbtacks already loose in a bowl solved the problem much faster. Why? Because when the box was presented as a container, they saw it only as a container—not as a potential shelf. This illustrates functional fixedness: the box's typical role blinded them to its alternative use.
❓ Câu hỏi Question: Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of functional fixedness.
