Niche Construction refers to the process by which organisms actively modify their environment, thereby altering the selective pressures they and other species face. Unlike passive adaptation, niche construction can create new ecological niches or change existing ones, influencing evolutionary trajectories. This concept challenges the traditional view that organisms simply adapt to fixed environments. Instead, organisms act as ecosystem engineers, shaping their habitats in ways that benefit their survival and reproduction, often with cascading effects on biodiversity.

Professor: Let me give you a classic example: beavers. Beavers build dams across streams, creating ponds. This dramatically changes the local environment—water flow slows, sediment accumulates, and new aquatic plants grow. These changes attract fish, frogs, and insects that thrive in still water. For the beavers themselves, the pond provides protection from predators and easy access to food. But here's the key: the pond also alters the selection pressures on the beavers. For instance, in deeper water, beavers with stronger swimming abilities are more likely to survive and reproduce, passing on those traits. Over generations, this habitat modification influences the beavers' evolution—they become better swimmers. So, the beavers aren't just adapting to an existing environment; they actively constructed a new one that, in turn, shaped their own evolution.
