In biology, the term “behavioral adaptation” refers to an action an organism takes to survive in its environment. Unlike physical traits, these are learned or instinctive behaviors that help an animal find food, avoid predators, or reproduce. For example, some birds migrate seasonally to warmer regions where food is more abundant. Behavioral adaptations are crucial because they allow species to respond flexibly to changes in their surroundings without evolving new physical features.

Professor: Let me give you a great example from a study on desert kangaroo rats. These small rodents live in extremely dry areas where water is scarce. Their behavioral adaptation is to avoid the heat of the day. During the hot afternoon, they stay inside their cool underground burrows to save water. They only come out at night when the temperature drops. But here’s the clever part—when they forage for seeds at night, they don’t just eat any seed. They carefully pick seeds with high moisture content and carry them back to the burrow. The burrow’s humidity helps the seeds absorb moisture from the air, so the rats get more water from the same food. This behavior—timing activity and choosing moist seeds—isn’t something they’re born with; they learn it from watching older rats. It directly helps them survive in a habitat where water is almost impossible to find.
