Today, we're going to talk about a fascinating concept in animal behavior called 'sensory exploitation.' This is when one animal evolves a trait that exploits the pre-existing sensory biases of another animal, often to its advantage. Let me give you two examples. First, consider the male túngara frog. Females are naturally attracted to the 'plop' sound of a falling fruit, because it signals a potential food source. Male frogs have evolved to add a 'chuck' to their mating call, which mimics that plop. This exploits the females' pre-existing auditory bias, making them more likely to approach. Second, think about the water mite. Female water mites have a sensory bias for detecting the vibrations of small prey, like copepods. Male mites have evolved to mimic those vibrations when approaching females. This triggers the females' predatory response, causing them to grab the male—which is actually the start of mating. In both cases, the males exploit what females are already wired to detect.
