Today, we're going to talk about a fascinating concept in animal behavior called 'sensory exploitation.' This is when a species evolves a trait that takes advantage of an existing sensory bias in another species, often to increase its own reproductive success. Let me give you two examples. First, consider the water mite. Female water mites are naturally attracted to vibrations on the water surface because those vibrations often signal the presence of their prey, like small crustaceans. Male water mites have evolved to produce vibrations that mimic those of the prey, but they do this specifically when a female is nearby. The female, drawn by the vibrations, approaches the male, leading to mating. Second, think about the túngara frog. Female túngara frogs are drawn to the 'chuck' part of a male's call because it resembles the sound of a predator, which for some reason attracts them. Males that add extra 'chucks' to their calls are more successful at attracting females, even though this also makes them more noticeable to predators. So, in both cases, the males exploit pre-existing female sensory biases to gain a mating advantage.
