Using the examples from the lecture, explain the professor's main point about sensory exploitation in animal behavior.

Today we're going to talk about a fascinating concept in animal behavior called 'sensory exploitation.' This occurs when a species evolves a trait that exploits an existing sensory bias in another species, often for reproductive advantage. Let me give you two examples. First, consider the male water mite. Female water mites have a natural preference for capturing small crustaceans because they resemble their prey. Male water mites have evolved to mimic the movement patterns of these crustaceans, which triggers the female's predatory response. When the female attacks, the male attaches and mates with her. This works because the female's sensory system is already wired to respond to that specific movement. Second, think about the swordtail fish. Female swordtails have a pre-existing preference for males with longer tails, likely because longer tails make males more conspicuous and easier to spot in murky water. Over time, males developed an elongated sword-like extension on their tails, which exploits this female preference. Even though this sword makes swimming less efficient, it increases mating success dramatically. So sensory exploitation shows how evolution can co-opt existing biases for new purposes.
