Today, we're going to talk about a fascinating concept in animal behavior called 'sensory exploitation.' This is when a species evolves a trait that takes advantage of an existing sensory bias in another species, often for reproductive purposes. The key idea is that these traits didn't evolve to match a preference—rather, the preference was already there, and the trait evolved to exploit it. Let me give you two examples. First, consider the water mite. Male water mites have evolved a leg-waving behavior during courtship. Females have a pre-existing sensory bias for detecting vibrations of small prey near the water surface. The males' leg-waving mimics those vibrations, so females are attracted to the males because they think they're detecting a meal. Second, think about the swordtail fish. Female swordtails have a natural preference for males with longer tails, but this preference likely existed before the 'sword' evolved. In a related species without swords, females still prefer males with artificially attached swords, showing the bias predates the trait. So in both cases, the trait evolved to exploit an existing sensory system.
