Question: Using the examples from the lecture, explain the professor's main point about behavioral thermoregulation.

Today, we're going to talk about a fascinating concept in evolutionary biology called 'behavioral thermoregulation.' This refers to the ways animals actively adjust their behavior to control their body temperature, rather than relying solely on physiological mechanisms like sweating or shivering. The main point is that behavior can be just as important as physiology in helping animals survive in extreme environments. Let me give you two examples. First, consider the desert iguana. In the scorching heat of the Mojave Desert, ground temperatures can exceed 50 degrees Celsius. The iguana doesn't just sit there; it climbs onto rocks or shrubs to get above the hot ground, where the air is cooler. By doing this, it avoids overheating and can stay active during the day. Second, think about the honeybee. In winter, bees cluster together inside the hive, and the bees on the outside constantly rotate with those on the inside. This shivering and movement generates heat, keeping the cluster's core at a stable 35 degrees Celsius, even when outside temperatures drop below freezing. So, both examples show how animals use specific behaviors to regulate their body temperature and thrive.
