Today we're going to talk about a fascinating concept in animal behavior called 'sensory exploitation.' This is when a male animal evolves a trait that appeals to a pre-existing sensory bias in the female, even if that trait has no direct survival benefit. The key is that the female's preference already exists for another reason, and the male simply exploits it. Let me give you two examples. First, consider the guppy. Female guppies naturally prefer orange-colored objects—this preference likely evolved because orange correlates with food sources like certain fruits or insects. Male guppies have evolved bright orange spots, which trick the females into approaching them, increasing mating success. Second, think of the water mite. In this species, females are attracted to the vibration patterns of their prey, such as small crustaceans. Males have evolved to mimic these vibration signals with their legs, luring females closer for mating. In both cases, the males didn't create the preference; they just tapped into what was already there.
