Today we're going to talk about a concept in biology called 'mimicry.' Mimicry occurs when one species evolves to resemble another species in order to gain a survival advantage. There are two main types of mimicry that we'll explore. First, there's Batesian mimicry, where a harmless species mimics a dangerous or unpalatable species to avoid predators. For example, the scarlet king snake, which is harmless, has evolved to look very similar to the coral snake, which is venomous. Predators learn to avoid the coral snake's bright red, yellow, and black bands, and they also avoid the king snake because it looks the same. Second, there's Mullerian mimicry, where two or more dangerous species evolve to look alike. This is beneficial because predators learn to avoid the shared pattern more quickly. For instance, several species of stinging bees and wasps share similar black-and-yellow striped patterns. Even though each species is already dangerous, by looking alike, they reinforce the warning signal, so predators need only encounter one of them to learn to avoid all of them. So, mimicry is a fascinating evolutionary adaptation that helps species survive through visual deception or shared warning signals.
