Today, we're going to talk about a fascinating concept in animal behavior called 'sensory exploitation.' In simple terms, this is when a species evolves a trait that exploits an existing sensory bias in another species, often to gain a reproductive advantage. This isn't about creating a new sense, but rather tapping into something already there. Let me give you two classic examples. First, consider the male túngara frog. Female frogs are naturally attracted to low-frequency sounds, which help them locate water. Male túngara frogs have evolved to add a 'chuck' to their call, which is a low-frequency component. This extra sound exploits the females' pre-existing preference, making them more likely to approach. Second, there's the water mite, a tiny aquatic arachnid. Its larvae mimic the vibrations of a small water flea, which is the favorite food of the copepod, a tiny crustacean. When the copepod detects these vibrations, it moves toward what it thinks is a meal, but instead, the mite larva attaches itself to the copepod for a ride to find a host. So in both cases, the signaler uses the receiver's existing sensory system for its own benefit.
