Question: Using the examples from the lecture, explain the professor's main point about sensory exploitation in animal communication.

Today, we're going to talk about a fascinating concept in animal behavior called 'sensory exploitation.' This is when a signal evolves not primarily for communication between individuals of the same species, but because it exploits a pre-existing sensory bias in the receiver. In other words, the receiver already has a preference for certain stimuli, and the signaler evolves to tap into that. Let me give you two examples. First, consider the water mite, a small aquatic arachnid. The males of this species have evolved to wave their legs in a way that mimics the vibrations of a small prey item, like a copepod. Female water mites naturally detect these vibrations to locate food. When they feel the male's vibration, they approach it, thinking they've found a meal, but instead, they encounter a potential mate. So, the male exploits the female's existing sensory system for prey detection. Second, think about the tungara frog. Male tungara frogs produce a 'whine' call to attract females. However, some males add an extra 'chuck' to the call. Female frogs have a pre-existing auditory bias for low-frequency sounds, which in their environment are often produced by predators. Interestingly, the 'chuck' adds a low-frequency component that makes the call more attractive to females, but it also makes the male more conspicuous to predators. So, in this case, the sensory exploitation increases mating success but at a cost. Both examples show how pre-existing sensory biases can drive the evolution of signals.
