Today, we're going to talk about a fascinating concept in animal behavior called 'cooperative hunting.' This is when animals work together in a group to catch prey, which they couldn't easily capture alone. The main point is that cooperation increases hunting success and allows access to larger prey. Let me give you two examples. First, consider lions. Female lions in a pride hunt together. They use a strategy where some lions circle around to drive the prey, like zebras, toward the others hiding in ambush. This teamwork allows them to take down large animals that a single lion could not overpower. Second, think of orcas, or killer whales. They hunt in pods, and they use a technique called 'wave washing.' When hunting seals on ice floes, several orcas swim together to create a large wave that washes the seal off the ice into the water, where other pod members are waiting. This requires precise coordination and communication. So, in both cases, cooperation is key to catching food that would otherwise be out of reach.
