Today, we're going to talk about a fascinating concept in animal behavior called 'sensory exploitation.' This idea suggests that certain traits in animals evolved not for their original function, but because they exploit pre-existing sensory biases in the opposite sex. Let me give you two examples. First, consider the water mite, a small aquatic arthropod. Male water mites have evolved to perform a specific leg-waving display when approaching a female. This display isn't about signaling quality—it actually mimics the vibrations of a copepod, which is a prey item that female water mites are naturally wired to detect and attack. So, when the female sees the male's leg-waving, she approaches it thinking it's dinner, and the male takes advantage of that moment to mate. Second, think about the tungara frog. Female tungara frogs are attracted to the 'chuck' sound that males add to their calls. Research showed that this 'chuck' is similar to a sound made by a predator—a bat's echolocation call—which the female frogs are wired to avoid. But over time, males evolved to produce a low-frequency version of that sound, which females find attractive because it mimics the sound of a larger, more dominant frog. So, in both cases, the males are exploiting sensory systems that evolved for other reasons.
