Today, we're going to talk about a fascinating concept in animal behavior known as 'sensory exploitation.' This theory suggests that males in some species evolve traits that exploit pre-existing sensory biases in females, which were originally shaped by natural selection for other purposes. In other words, females already have a preference for certain signals, and males take advantage of that. Let me give you two examples. First, consider the túngara frog. Female túngara frogs are naturally attracted to the 'whine' part of the male's call because it resembles sounds made by their predators, which they need to detect for survival. Males add an extra 'chuck' to their call, which enhances the attractiveness, even though the chuck doesn't carry any information about the male's quality. Second, look at the swordtail fish. Females have a pre-existing bias for elongated structures because longer bodies are associated with faster swimming and predator evasion. Males evolved a 'sword' – an extension of their tail fin – which exploits this bias, making them more attractive to females, even though the sword actually hinders swimming. In both cases, the male's trait didn't evolve to signal quality but to exploit an existing female preference.
