Today we're going to talk about a fascinating concept in animal behavior called 'sensory exploitation.' This is when a species evolves a trait that takes advantage of an existing sensory bias in another species, often for reproductive purposes. The key point is that the receiver's sensory system is already wired to respond to certain stimuli, and the signaler evolves to exploit that pre-existing bias. Let me give you two examples. First, consider the water mite, a small aquatic animal. The female water mite is naturally attracted to vibrations that mimic its prey, which are tiny crustaceans. Male water mites, during courtship, produce vibrations that mimic those of the prey, tricking the female into approaching. This increases his chance of mating. Second, think about the túngara frog. Female frogs are drawn to the calls of male frogs, but they have a heightened sensitivity to low-frequency sounds, which they use to locate predators. Some male frogs have evolved to produce calls with a low-frequency component, even though it makes them more vulnerable to predators, because it exploits the females' pre-existing auditory bias, making them more attractive. So in both cases, the males evolved signals that tap into what females already find appealing or attention-grabbing.
