Today we're going to talk about a fascinating behavioral adaptation in animals called 'sensory bias'. Sensory bias refers to a situation where a pre-existing sensory preference in an animal, often for a particular food or visual cue, influences its mating choices. The key point is that this preference did not evolve for mating purposes, but it gets co-opted because it helps an individual choose a better mate. Let me give you two examples. First, in some species of fish, females naturally prefer to eat red-colored insects because they are more nutritious. Over time, males evolved to develop red spots on their bodies. Females then choose males with brighter red spots, not because the spots indicate health directly, but because the females are drawn to the red color. Second, consider the case of certain birds, like the bowerbird, where females have a built-in preference for blue objects, possibly because blue fruits are more common in their diet. Male bowerbirds decorate their nests with blue items like berries or feathers. Females visit these bowers and select males with the most blue decorations, again because of their existing attraction to blue. So in both cases, the mating preference is a byproduct of a food preference.
