📖 読解文章

The introduction of invasive species is often cited as a major threat to biodiversity, but some scientists argue that in certain cases, non-native species can actually benefit ecosystems. One example is the introduction of the tamarisk tree (Tamarix spp.) to the southwestern United States. Proponents of this view offer three main arguments. First, tamarisk provides critical nesting habitat for the endangered southwestern willow flycatcher (Empidonax traillii extimus). The bird has been observed nesting extensively in tamarisk stands along the Colorado River, where native willow trees have declined due to water management practices. Second, tamarisk helps stabilize riverbanks and prevent soil erosion. Its deep root system binds soil more effectively than many native riparian plants, reducing sediment runoff into waterways. Third, tamarisk can serve as a carbon sink, absorbing significant amounts of atmospheric carbon dioxide. Studies have shown that tamarisk growth rates are high in arid regions, and its biomass stores carbon that might otherwise contribute to climate change. Therefore, removing tamarisk, as some conservation programs do, could have unintended negative consequences for wildlife, soil stability, and climate regulation.
