The extinction of the megafauna—large animals such as mammoths, giant sloths, and saber-toothed cats—at the end of the Pleistocene epoch has long puzzled scientists. While many hypotheses exist, the most widely accepted explanation is overhunting by early humans. This theory, known as the 'Pleistocene overkill hypothesis,' argues that human hunters, armed with advanced tools and cooperative strategies, drove these animals to extinction shortly after their arrival in new territories. First, archaeological evidence supports this claim: kill sites with butchered megafauna remains coincide with human expansion across continents, such as the Clovis culture in North America. Second, the timing of extinctions aligns with human migration patterns; in New Zealand, for example, the moa disappeared within a century of Polynesian settlement. Third, megafauna exhibited life-history traits—such as long gestation periods and low reproductive rates—that made them highly vulnerable to even modest levels of hunting pressure. Together, these points suggest that human predation was the primary driver of megafaunal extinction, rather than climate change or other natural causes.
