The extinction of the passenger pigeon (Ectopistes migratorius) in the early 20th century has long been attributed to overhunting by humans. However, recent research suggests that the species' demise was primarily driven by natural factors, particularly its extreme social behavior and genetic vulnerability. Three main arguments support this view. First, passenger pigeons bred in massive, dense colonies, sometimes containing millions of birds. This breeding strategy made them highly susceptible to sudden environmental disturbances, such as storms or disease outbreaks, which could wipe out entire colonies in a single season. Second, genetic analyses of museum specimens reveal that the passenger pigeon had remarkably low genetic diversity, even when its population was at its peak. This lack of variation meant the species was poorly equipped to adapt to changing conditions or resist novel pathogens. Third, the pigeon's reliance on mast crops—acorns and beechnuts—was highly unpredictable. During years when these food sources failed, the pigeons faced starvation and reproductive failure, and such natural boom-and-bust cycles could have driven the population to a critical threshold even without human interference.
