The extinction of the dinosaurs at the end of the Cretaceous period has long been attributed to a massive asteroid impact. However, a growing body of evidence suggests that intense volcanic activity, specifically the Deccan Traps in modern-day India, played a more significant role. First, the timing of the Deccan Traps eruptions aligns closely with the extinction event. Radioisotopic dating indicates that the main phase of volcanic activity occurred around 66 million years ago, overlapping with the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary. This temporal correlation suggests that volcanic emissions, rather than a single impact, could have driven the extinction. Second, volcanic gases, such as sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide, would have caused drastic climate changes. Sulfur aerosols could have blocked sunlight, leading to a global cooling period, while carbon dioxide would have later caused greenhouse warming. These alternating climate extremes would have stressed ecosystems, making it difficult for many species to survive. Third, the fossil record shows a gradual decline in dinosaur diversity in the millions of years before the impact, which contradicts the sudden extinction scenario. This gradual decline is more consistent with the long-term environmental stress caused by volcanic activity than with an instantaneous catastrophe.
