📖 읽기 지문

The decline of the honeybee population, known as Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), has been a growing concern for ecologists and agriculturalists. Several theories have been proposed to explain this phenomenon, and one prominent hypothesis attributes CCD to the widespread use of neonicotinoid pesticides. Supporters of this theory argue that these chemicals, which are applied to crops, are absorbed by plants and contaminate pollen and nectar. When honeybees forage, they ingest sublethal doses of these pesticides, which can impair their neurological functions, leading to disorientation and an inability to navigate back to the hive. A second reason is that neonicotinoids weaken bees' immune systems, making them more susceptible to pathogens and parasites, such as the Varroa mite, which are often found in collapsed colonies. Thirdly, laboratory studies have demonstrated that even at low, field-realistic concentrations, neonicotinoids reduce foraging activity and brood production, thereby undermining colony growth and long-term survival. Thus, the evidence collectively suggests that neonicotinoid pesticides are a primary driver of CCD, and restricting their use is essential to protect pollinator populations.
