📖 読解文章

The pyramids of ancient Egypt have long fascinated historians and engineers alike. While conventional theories attribute their construction to massive labor forces using ramps and sledges, a more recent hypothesis suggests that the Egyptians may have employed an advanced hydraulic system to lift and position the massive stone blocks. Proponents of this 'hydraulic theory' point to three main pieces of evidence. First, the Great Pyramid of Giza is located near the Nile River, and ancient canals have been discovered that could have channeled water to the construction site. Second, remnants of what appear to be water-lifting devices, such as wooden troughs and basins, have been found in the vicinity of the pyramids, suggesting that water was used to generate mechanical power. Third, the internal structure of the pyramid includes narrow shafts and chambers that could have functioned as water conduits and pressure chambers, allowing water to lift the stones via buoyancy or hydraulic pistons. These features, supporters argue, align with a sophisticated understanding of hydraulics that predates known Greek and Roman achievements by millennia.
