📖 読解文章

The extinction of the woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) at the end of the Pleistocene has long been debated. While some scientists argue that human hunting was the primary cause, others propose that climate change or a combination of factors led to their demise. However, a recent hypothesis suggests that a catastrophic cosmic impact, such as a comet or asteroid strike, was the main driver. This theory is supported by three key lines of evidence. First, a thin layer of sediments dating to approximately 12,800 years ago, known as the Younger Dryas boundary, contains high concentrations of nanodiamonds, microscopic particles that are often formed under extreme shock pressures and temperatures typical of cosmic impacts. Second, widespread evidence of massive wildfires at this time, including charcoal and soot layers across multiple continents, aligns with the intense heat generated by an impact event. Third, the timing of the woolly mammoth’s final extinction coincides with this impact period, as radiocarbon dating of the youngest mammoth remains in North America and Eurasia clusters around 12,800 to 12,000 years ago, suggesting a sudden, catastrophic die-off rather than a gradual decline.
