The extinction of the dinosaurs at the end of the Cretaceous period, approximately 66 million years ago, has long been attributed to a massive asteroid impact. While the impact theory is widely accepted, recent evidence suggests that volcanic activity, specifically the Deccan Traps in modern-day India, may have played a more significant role than previously thought. Proponents of the volcanic hypothesis argue three main points. First, the Deccan Traps eruptions began well before the asteroid impact and lasted for over a million years, releasing enormous amounts of sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide. These gases would have caused severe acid rain and a rapid greenhouse effect, leading to global warming and ocean acidification that stressed ecosystems long before the impact. Second, the timing of the eruptions correlates with a gradual decline in dinosaur diversity, as seen in fossil records from the late Cretaceous. This decline suggests that dinosaurs were already vulnerable due to environmental stress, making them less resilient to any sudden catastrophe. Third, volcanic eruptions produce massive quantities of particulates and aerosols that could have blocked sunlight, causing a volcanic winter. Such an event would have disrupted photosynthesis and collapsed food chains, potentially explaining the extinction without requiring an asteroid impact. Thus, the volcanic hypothesis offers a compelling alternative to the impact theory, emphasizing prolonged environmental disruption rather than a single catastrophic event.

The lecture challenges the volcanic hypothesis presented in the reading, arguing that the asteroid impact remains the primary cause of dinosaur extinction. First, while the Deccan Traps eruptions were indeed long-lasting, their intensity was not constant. The most severe phase of eruptions occurred after the asteroid impact, not before. In fact, the impact may have triggered increased volcanic activity, so the environmental effects of the eruptions were a consequence of the impact rather than an independent cause. Second, the claim of a gradual dinosaur decline is misleading. Fossil records show that dinosaur diversity was relatively stable until the very end of the Cretaceous, with only a minor decline in the last few hundred thousand years. This decline can be attributed to short-term climate fluctuations, not the entire volcanic period. Moreover, marine fossils, such as foraminifera, show a sudden extinction event, not a gradual one, which aligns with an instantaneous catastrophe. Third, the volcanic winter scenario is not supported by geochemical evidence. Iridium, a rare element in Earth's crust but abundant in asteroids, is found in a distinct layer at the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary worldwide. This iridium anomaly is precisely dated to the time of the extinction, and its global distribution is inconsistent with volcanic eruptions, which would produce a localized signature. Additionally, shocked quartz and tektites, formed only by high-energy impacts, are present in the same layer. Therefore, the lecture asserts that the asteroid impact caused a sudden and catastrophic extinction, with volcanic activity playing only a minor and secondary role.
