📖 Reading Passage

The Industrial Revolution, which began in Britain in the late 18th century, is often celebrated as a period of unprecedented technological progress and economic growth. However, recent scholarship suggests that its overall impact on human well-being was largely negative. Three key arguments support this view. First, working conditions in factories were notoriously harsh. Laborers, including children, worked 12-16 hour days in dangerous environments, leading to widespread injuries and chronic health problems. Second, the rapid urbanization that accompanied industrialization created overcrowded, unsanitary cities. Cholera and typhoid outbreaks were common, and life expectancy in industrial centers like Manchester was significantly lower than in rural areas. Third, the economic benefits of industrialization were unevenly distributed. While factory owners amassed great wealth, the majority of workers earned subsistence wages and lived in poverty, with little opportunity for social mobility. Thus, despite advances in production, the Industrial Revolution degraded the quality of life for most people.
